In 2007, we extended to masonry structures a multiscale approach developed for molecular dynamics at Northwestern University.
We called the representative volume element, Virtual Block Cluster (VBC), as we considered a DEM microstructure for the masonry.
The continuum model, discretised by Finite Element, performs exactly as the direct numerical simulation of the DEM microstructure.
This model is implemented in our SMARTmasonry software.
